The aim of reading in L2 focused in Secondary
Education.
“ Language is the chore capacity which basically defines human beings”. This quote by Noam Chomsky (1965)
states the importance of language and makes us reflect on how its teaching and
learning should be implemented. Our role as MFL teachers plays a key role
nowadays not by nurturing our students with knowledge but mainly in an
effective and productive use of language in all its aspects and skills. The benefits of reading in L2 are widely
known: learning of new structures, vocabulary, expressions and, mainly, an extensive
field of potential cultural knowledge at the disposal of students.
Having in mind the Day of the Book,
my students are reading a collection of tales and short stories of different
genre and time. Students are encouraged to find its current relevance and the
moral of each story to be applied in our times. Once they have reflected and
discussed on the various topics and morals, they carry out different projects
to be exposed. Depending on the level, they carry out projects dealing with oral
expositions mixed up with posters, comic-strips or even creative Prezi
presentations.
Apart
from this celebration, students are inspired to read by their own and they are
welcome to step by the English Department to borrow any book they like from the
Department’s collection. Once they read it, they write an essay which will be
rewarded in their final mark. Our role to promote reading is essential due to
the fact that a kid/ student who takes the reading habit, he/she will become an
adult who thinks by himself having a critical mind
